Start Court Team Wins Gold at the 2025 Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards
We are proud to announce, Start Court has been awarded Gold in the 2025 Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards (ACVPA) – a national recognition of programs that make a real difference in reducing crime and violence across Australia.
Start Court is a collaborative initiative led by the State Forensic Mental Health Service (SFMHS) (Department of Health) in partnership with the Mental Health Commission, Department of Justice, and key stakeholders including Outcare, WA Police, Legal Aid, Aboriginal Legal Services, and community health providers. Operating within the Perth Magistrate’s Court, Start Court offers an alternative to traditional court processes for individuals experiencing mental health challenges, alcohol and other drug issues, and unmet psychosocial needs.
By creating a supportive courtroom environment and focusing on treatment, rehabilitation, and social inclusion, Start Court aims to break the cycle of reoffending, improve mental health outcomes, and enhance community safety. This award recognises the program’s innovation, measurable success, and potential for replication across other jurisdictions.
The award was accepted in Canberra by Nicolette Sparks, Team Leader Diversion Services representing Outcare alongside our partners from Department of Health and Department of Justice. Winning Gold at the ACVPA is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of all partners involved. It highlights the impact of Start Court in addressing the overrepresentation of people with mental health challenges in the justice system and reinforces our shared commitment to safer, healthier communities.
